Interview tips

Atomic's interview tips show you how to convince any interviewer of your special talents and become a sort after candidate. Below are tips that will ensure you master the interview process.

1. Before your interview

Prepare

Preparation is the key to a successful interview. Your lack of preparation will be painfully obvious, sending numerous warning signals to a potential employer about your character and future job performance.

  • Dress appropriately.
  • Bring your resume and any other information you required eg licences, sponsorship details.
  • Bring a pen and notepad.
  • Bring a briefcase.
  • Bring any work samples if required.
  • Practice answering questions and role play with a friend or family member. When practicing, try to avoid terms such as 'like' and 'you know' and 'ummm'. However it is important not to sound too scripted as if you have memorised each answer.

Research

It's to your advantage to carefully research the job and the company. The best place to start is the company's website. Look for annual reports, the company's missions and objectives, information on employers, strength and weakness, opportunities and treats as well as areas of expertise. Become more familiar with a company's products or services. There may also be more information on your role and a detailed description of your job. Alternatively you can request information about the company and your role but still make sure you do your homework as it will prepare you for your interview.

Practice

Practice answering commonly asked interview questions. A good start is to identify your particular interests, abilities, skills, and personality characteristics that coincide with the particular job requirements and qualifications. Also consider how your education and experience corresponds to the position specifications. One of your major goals in an interview is to "prove" or convince your potential employer that you would be a good match for the position and company environment.

2. Your interview - first impressions count

It is important to show the interviewer that you are relaxed in the interview by taking your time to answer questions. It is also easier to answer each question when you understand the question prior to answering it. It may also help to ask the question to be rephrased if it is not clear.

  • Be yourself. Speak clearly and enthusiastically about your work experiences and the skills you have to offer. Be professional but don't be afraid to let your personality shine through.
  • Listen carefully. There is nothing worse than to ask a question an employer has already talked to you about. Demonstrate your understanding by asking relevant questions and answering the question your interviewer asked.
  • Be positive. You should not give excuses about any negative experiences. For example, if you were asked why your grades are low, try to focus on stating the facts and what you have learnt.
  • Don't be late. Arrive approximately 15 minutes before the interview to show the interviewer you are prepared and reliable.
  • Be poised. Pay attention to your non-verbal behaviour. Look the interviewer in the eye and sit up straight ideally with both feet on the floor. And it's best to control those nervous habits such as biting finger nails and giggling.

3. After your interview

Ask questions

By coming prepared to the interview with some intelligent question makes you seem interested and gives the impression to the interviewer that they also have to sell the job to you. Show you can also have power!

Send a thank you letter

After the interview send a thank you letter - conveys respect for the interviewer, and enthusiasm for the company and position for which you interviewed. Also, interviewers may have interviewed several people for that particular position; therefore, such correspondence can play a vital role in reminding the interviewer of your qualifications. Since the interview is often the most decisive factor in determining who is hired for a specific position, job seekers need to master the process.
